Atheist: Natural Morals, Real Meaning, Credible Truth

Darwin quotes...

"Nor could we check our sympathy, if so urged by hard reason, without deterioration in the noblest part of our nature."

"if we were intentionally to neglect the weak and helpless, it could only be for a contingent benefit, with a certain and great present evil."

I am watching BBC's series "Darwin's Dangerous Idea" on YouTube and in the episode on equality, Andrew Marr paraphrased the above quotes from Darwin's book "Decent of Man".

Something to use against creationists when they claim "Darwinism" is immoral.

  1. Darwinism immoral? Interesting proposition. I suppose evolution is amoral in that it favors that which promotes species survival as opposed to that which doesn't, but to make a leap from that to the idea that Darwinists are immoral to the extent that they take evolution seriously is incredible. But then it's also incredible to me that Christians imagine themselves to hold some sort of moral high ground, this without regard for the millions they've killed or least persecuted right up until the present moment. If many of them had their way, people such as you and I would be killed while the rest of them looked on silently.

  2. That was what I was getting from those I discussed this with, "survival of the fittest" lead to Stalin, Hitler, etc... yeah, religion is mind-boggling to me since I've never been a believer. I am glad I live in the SF bay area, my atheist Atheist Bus sticker hardly gets a glance.
